Another fall sports season has concluded, and Sugar-Salem athletics has come through in a big way. Each team came into the season with high expectations, and our student-athletes and coaches have had an exceptional year! All six fall sports teams won their district title–most in resounding fashion. Our boys and girls cross country teams absolutely dominated at districts–with more runners for both teams in the top 20 than teams are allowed to send to the state cross country meet. Boys and girls soccer had similar success in their conference play–both taking district titles after dominating through the regular season. Volleyball took district in a hard-fought battle with South Fremont, and Football steamrolled through the regular season to qualify for the state playoffs.
In the state tournaments, boys soccer lost their opening match, putting them out of state championship contention; however, they bounced back to defeat Timberlake 3-2 in their second game, then followed up with a dominating performance in the consolation final. Girls soccer fought their way to the championship game, but fell in that game with a second-place finish. Volleyball dropped a game in the semifinals, fought their way back through the double-elimination bracket to the championship game, and ended up falling in a tight match to win a second-place trophy. Boys and girls cross country dominated at the state tournament–with the boys a runaway winner of their 4th consecutive state title and the girls winning their second. Finally, in November, the boys football defeated Homedale–finishing off the game with a goal-line stand to win the state title in their first appearance in the state football title game since 1988.
Congratulations to all!
