Sugar-Salem Orchestra Students Win Big at State Competition

This weekend the Sugar-Salem String Trio and Quintet competed in the State Solo and Small Ensemble Competition in Pocatello.  At this state event, students from 5A to 1A competed against each other.

The String Trio earned a Superior rating and won first place in their division.  Members of the trio are Elizabeth Baldwin – violin, Bailee Bartschi – violin, and Julianna Barrus – violin.  They were accompanied by Brendon Wheeler – piano. They performed “Sonata XXI con tres violini” by Italian composer Giovani Gabrieli.

The String Quintet earned a Superior rating and won first place in their division as well.  Members of the quintet are Corrine Flaig – violin, Micah Maughan – violin, Brendon Wheeler – viola, Kaleb Maughan – cello, and Caleb Colvin – bass.  They performed “Cumbia Y Congo” by American composer William Grant Still.

Both groups were coached by Jennifer Barrus and assisted by Ted Ashton.  Congratulations to these dedicated students!
