Title IX Policy
Title IX: Sex Discrimination and Harassment
Sugar-Salem School District #322 is committed to providing a safe and respectful learning and working environment. The District prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex, including sexual harassment, sexual orientation, gender identity, and pregnancy.
The District also prohibits retaliation against any individual who reports discrimination or participates in a Title IX process.

How to Report
Any student, employee, or community member who experiences or witnesses sex discrimination or harassment is encouraged to report it to the Title IX Coordinator.
You may report:
- In person
- By phone
- By email
- By mail
Supportive Measures
After a report is made, the Title IX Coordinator will promptly:
- Reach out to the complainant
- Discuss available supportive measures
- Explain how to file a formal complaint
Supportive measures are available whether or not a formal complaint is filed and are provided at no cost, when reasonably available.
Filing a Formal Complaint
A formal complaint is required to begin an investigation.
A formal complaint:
- Must be submitted in writing (email or paper)
- Must include the complainant’s name or signature
- Requests that the District investigate the allegations
The Title IX Coordinator will assist with filing a formal complaint if needed.
Informal Resolution Option
After a formal complaint is filed, the District may offer an informal resolution process (such as mediation), when appropriate.
- Both parties must agree in writing
- Participation is voluntary
- Either party may stop the process at any time before a resolution is reached
Grievance Process Overview
The District follows a fair and impartial process consistent with guidance from the U.S. Department of Education Office for Civil Rights.
Step 1: Notice of Allegations
Both parties receive written notice of the allegations and an explanation of the process.
Step 2: Investigation
A trained investigator:
- Gathers evidence
- Interviews parties and witnesses
- Prepares an investigative report
Both parties have equal opportunity to present evidence.
Step 3: Determination
A Decision Maker:
- Reviews all evidence
- Issues a written decision to both parties at the same time
Step 4: Appeal
Both parties have the right to appeal the decision based on:
- Procedural errors
- New evidence
- Conflict of interest or bias
Timeframes
The District resolves complaints within reasonably prompt timeframes.
In some cases, timelines may be adjusted for good cause, including:
- Availability of parties or witnesses
- Law enforcement involvement
- Need for language assistance or accommodations
If delays occur, both parties will be notified.
